Originally a fort built by the military as a base of operations in the Seminole Wars, the city of Ft. Myers occupies a stretch of prime real estate along the south bank of the Caloosahatchee River in Southwest Florida. Over the course of its existence, the city's fortunes have hit highs as well as lows. They rose and fell during the pioneer days, before and after each war and following the great depression. Today Ft. Myers has found a balance as the gateway to the Gulf of Mexico replete with sun-washed beaches, tropical gardens and swaying palm trees.

Known as the "City of Palms," Ft. Myers is a great location for families, retirees, professionals, entrepreneurs, the young and the young at heart. It offers endless access to water sports, museums, golf, historic tours and theater without losing its historical connection to the past. Instead of agriculture, tourism is the economic foundation of modern-day Ft. Myers, the seat of Lee County. Palm tree-lined McGregor Boulevard in the heart of Historic Ft. Myers has retained much of its charm, while its downtown is filled with commerce.
Families can hop a tram for a narrated tour of Fort Myers' colorful history. Along the way you'll stop at the side-by-side winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Also on the grounds is a museum showcasing the world's largest collection of Edison's inventions and memorabilia. The living history continues at the Burroughs Home, where charming tour guides in 1920's-era costumes share insight about the Georgian revival-style home. Other stops include Fort Myers Historical Museum, Children's Science Center, and Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium.
